  • NFL picks week 16

So far, so good. I had the Steelers Thursday night and the Cowboys Saturday night. Those were cookies to pick, even with Tony Romo's thumb in traction (or at least that's the way he was throwing). As for Sunday...

Buffalo over the New York Giants. The Bills are a team on the way up, and the Giants can't quite keep it together. They haven't dominated anyone, although in a close game, as the weather might well dictate, anything goes.

Green Bay over Chicago. The Bears have underperformed all season. The Packers have done the opposite, making this one easy to call. Even if I'm wrong, I could never have picked it any other way.

Cleveland over Cincinnati. The Bengals are all offense, and even that sputters at time. The Browns have a good offense and improving defense. They also have something to play for, beyond the Ohio state championship.

Detroit over Kansas City. Let's face it, the Chiefs are a mess. The Lions are less of a mess, and they have some weapons, including a quarterback smart enough to know how to win games he shouldn't win. This is one he should.

Indianapolis over Houston. I don't know if Peyton Manning is even going to play. If I knew for sure he wasn't, I might go with the Texans here. They'd love to beat the Colts, and they'd love to keep alive their shot at a .500 season.

Jacksonville over Oakland. These are two teams that are hard to figure out, but the Jaguars have been the better team, and are better yet with David Garrard playing. Plus, they have two terrific running backs that the Raiders probably can't stop. The Raiders don't have a number one quarterback, or at least they don't know who he is. They're capable of surprising anyone, though, as they showed last week against the Colts (even though they ended up losing).

Minnesota over Washington. The Vikings are rolling toward the playoffs. The Redskins have to win here to keep their own shot alive, but they're doing it with a quarterback who hasn't played much this century. I don't give them much of a chance, really.

New England over Miami. I don't see the Dolphins winning two in a row. I don't see the Patriots losing one in a row. I'd love to see this one go down to the wire, but I think the wire will probably happen in the first quarter.

New Orleans over Philadelphia. Here are two teams that should be better than they are. Maybe the Eagles can do to Drew Brees what they did to Tony Romo, but Brees seems to be on an upward swing, and the Saints should be able to outscore the Eagles in what could be a wild game.

Arizona over Atlanta. Anybody over the Falcons these days, right? Their season was lost before it started, and the Cardinals have been good at home.

Seattle over Baltimore. The Ravens have to win some week, but that might not be until next September. The Seahawks have a playoff spot locked up, but even if they play their second string they're still the better team.

Tennessee over the New York Jets. The Titans have let me down all season, but I still think they have enough for the Jets (who have not let me down, but only because I already knew they weren't very good).

Tampa Bay over San Francisco. Shaun Hill led the 49ers to a big win over the Bengals, but let's see what he can do over a team that does play defense. I'm willing to be convinced, but I think the Bucs win this one easily.

    And on Monday night...

San Diego over Denver. The Chargers are tough to beat at home. The Broncos are painful to watch anywhere. Even Rudolph will turn up his nose at this Christmas Eve stinker.
